AWE is responsible for the UK’s nuclear warheads and related nuclear security services. When they needed to carry out a 5-week chemical clean at one of their sites, they looked for a temporary tank solution.
They asked their partner Bilfinger to find the right equipment – a tank that could do the job, on a site with security restrictions and space constraints. Bilfinger turned to ATI to supply a bunded tank that met strict rules on compliance, access, and delivery.

The Challenge
This project came with several hurdles:
- Specialist equipment – a 20m³ bunded tank was needed but couldn’t be supplied by other tank hire companies.
- Custom fittings – the tank had to be adapted to connect with specialist equipment.
- Delivery constraints – with no hard-standing area, the tank had to stay on the delivery flatbed trailer for 5 weeks.
- Security checks – all drivers had to be DBS-checked to enter the site.
- Unexpected setbacks – due to increased security, extra ID was needed which the haulier’s first driver didn’t have. A quick re-delivery was arranged.
The Solution
We acted fast to solve the problems:
- Supplied a 20m³ bunded tank from our extensive fleet.
- Made custom adjustments to the fittings in our yard.
- Worked with a haulier who could leave the flatbed trailer on site.
- Ensured the haulier used DBS-checked drivers to meet security rules.
- Arranged for the haulier to re-deliver the next day to keep the project on schedule.
